Nikola Ilievski: a portret of the artist as a young man
NIKOLA ILIEVSKI is a young photographer from Skopje, who recently started connecting his work with music. You can hear the independent tracks on his SoundCloud. They mostly have an electronic and ambiental influence. Below we have provided you with a gallery of a sample of his work, as well as his music.
The young artist is mostly inspired by the monotonous and repetitive everyday life of the local Skopje youth he encounters. His music project is connected to his debut short film which came out last year, on which he collaborated with GIL OROZCO, a music producer from Mexico. The short film was also accompanied by a six month long photo collection.
Because he’s always been interested in music production, Nikola decided to start making his own. That’s how he started exploring the world of the audiovisual. The artists who have influenced him the most are ARCA and BJORK, he says, even though we sense a lot of pop elements in his work.
NESTVARNOST is the latest EP by NIKOLA. The five track collection holds tracks who explain some of his latest work. The tracks in NESTVARNOST vary in terms of dynamics and tempo. Listen to NESTVARNOST.
PANIC ROOM is a very dark, dynamic and claustrophobic track that paints the picture of an actual panic room really well. Starting from this track right up until the end we sense a certain speed bump and more repetitiveness. SHADOWPLAY however is an electronic track interrupted by glitch and liquid sounds. BRAIN DEAD has a mystical, dark and abstract melody with some deep and repetitive tones. Somewhere during the middle of the song the two repetitive tones come together in order to become a part of the same tempo. There are also BETTER THAN U and UWAGA, the first two tracks on the EP.
